Changed plans

Vandaag wilden we eigenlijk met ons gezin vertrekken naar Frankrijk - richting Provence-streek -, maar omdat onze kleine zoon in het ziekenhuis ligt met een hardnekkige bacterie (het arme ventje ligt er nu al 2 keer binnen 3 weken tijd!) en zijn toestand nog niet helemaal optimaal is, gaat dat plan niet door. Maar niet getreurd, er ligt nog een ander reisje voor ons in het verschiet volgende week (hopen we). Sorry, lieve mensen, als ik wat minder op jullie blogs te vinden ben en berichtjes achterlaat!

Van het gebrek aan frisse lucht en de gesloten ramen in het ziekenhuis krijg ik het soms wel benauwd, hetgeen een goede reden is om dan maar weer even naar buiten te gaan om leuke dingen op de kop te gaan tikken. Zoals dit kastje hierboven. Het stond kant-en-klaar-kaalgeschuurd in de kringloop, maar ik vind het toch net iets te geel van kleur. Ik denk dat ik er een white-wash op ga zetten of het alleszins zodanig bewerken dat het een oude look krijgt. Een zonnige groet vandaag richting Italië naar Vale van Les Cotrions en richting Finland en Anu van Valloittava Valkoinen voor de sympathieke awards die ze beide aan Something White toebedeeld hebben! Dankjewel meiden! Een gebeurtenis om weer eens enkele mooie blogs naar voren te brengen die een bezoek meer dan waard zijn:

Today we'd actually planned to leave with our family to France - the Provence area -, but since our little son is ill and has to stay in hospital because of an obstinate bacterium (the poor little guy stays there already for the second time within a period of 3 weeks!) and because his condition isn't still at its best, that plan won't take place. But we don't mourn over it, as there'll be another trip next week (we hope). Sorry, dear folks, if I'm not very much on your blogs and if I don't leave many messages for you!

The lack of fresh air and the closed windows in the hospital make me sick sometimes, which is a good reason to go outside and to look for nice things, as this cupboard here. I found it again in the thriftshop and it was already abrased, but it's still a bit too much yellow. I think I'll put a white-wash on it or give it an older look in another way. A sunny greeting today in direction of Italy to Vale from Les Cotrions and to Finland and Anu from Valloittava Valkoinen, who both gave a nice award to Something White! Thank you very much, girls! Sad Summer

Het schijnt nog niet echt te willen zomeren: de wolken stapelden zich vandaag weer op en in de namiddag kregen we hier opnieuw een plensbui, net op het moment dat ik de was van de drooglijn aan het halen was. Buiten een stoel erbij pakken zit er ook al niet in, want in onze contreien is het vrij fris en de zomerse temperaturen blijven duidelijk uit. Ik ben benieuwd welk weer we zullen krijgen op onze vakantie-bestemming en nu maar hopen dat we ook echt richting zon rijden volgende week. Op onderstaande foto de hemel boven ons huis rond 19.00 uur... tijd om de kaarsjes aan te steken hier!

Summer seems not willing to arrive: clouds were gathering again today and in the afternoon we got once more a downpour, just at the moment that I was taking my laundry off the clothes-line. We can forget about taking a chair outside either, since it is quite fresh in our regions and summer-temperatures clearly hold off. I'm curious what kind of weather we'll have on our holiday-destination and I hope that we really will drive towards the sun next week. On the picture below you can see the sky above our house around 7 p.m. ... time to light the candles!

L'été ne semble pas vouloir venir: des nuages s'accumulaient encore aujourd'hui et dans l'après-midi il y avait de nouveau une averse, juste au moment où j'étais en train de ramasser mon linge sec dehors. Prendre une chaise et s'installer à l'extérieur n'est pas une option non plus, puisqu'il fait assez frais dans nos parages et les températures estivales ne se manifestent clairement pas. Je suis curieuse quel genre de temps nous aurons sur notre destination de vacances et j'espère bien qu'on ira effectivement en direction du soleil la semaine prochaine. Sur la photo ci-dessus vous voyez le ciel au dessus de notre maison autour de 19.00 heures... temps d'allumer les bougies!

Wednesday's finds

Een regenachtige dag, maar leuke vondsten... A rainy day, but nice finds... Une journée pluvieuse, mais de jolies trouvailles...

Oostende

Gisteren zijn we een namiddagje naar Oostende geweest. Het ligt zo'n 20 minuten met de auto hier vandaan. Alle winkels waren open op deze zondag en bovendien is het ook nog eens de periode van de zomeruitverkoop: het krioelde overal in de winkelstraten van het vele volk en de hele dijk stond vol met allerlei kraampjes, zodat we daar maar weinig van de zee konden zien. En de regen maakte het er ook niet beter op. We waren dan ook blij toen we 's avonds weer naar huis reden. [Ik ga proberen om nog wat foto-albums te plaatsen.]

Yesterday we stayed an afternoon in Ostende at the seaside. It's just 20 minutes by car from here. All shops were open on this Sunday and moreover it's the period of summer-bargains and sales: all shopping-streets swarmed with many people and there were lots of different stands on the dike, so that we couldn't see much of the sea there. And the rain made things even worse. So we were happy to drive home again in the evening. [I'll try to insert some photo-albums.]

Hier nous avons passé un après-midi à Ostende à la mer. C'est seulement 20 minutes en voiture d'ici. Tous les magasins étaient ouverts ce dimanche et en plus c'est la période des soldes d'été: les rues commerçantes foissonnaient de gens et toute la digue était remplie d'étals, de telle sorte qu'on pouvait presque rien voir de la mer. Et la pluie rendait les choses encore plus désagréable. Nous étions donc heureux de rentrer à la maison le soir. [Je vais essayer d'ajouter encore des albums-photos.]

Summer delight

Op z'n minst een echte 'delight', maar echt 'light' is het niet , want er wordt hier slagroom onder de quark geklopt. Eenvoudig te maken en smeuïg lekker als weinig andere desserts: een rode-vruchten-trifle, maar dan zonder de koekjes erin. Een trifle kun je op velerlei manieren bereiden, maar voor deze variant heb ik enkel (magere) quark, geklopte room, suiker en rode vruchten gebruikt. Mijn mix van rode bessen, bramen, frambozen, kersen en zwarte bessen komt uit de diepvries, maar je kunt deze uiteraard vervangen door andere soorten (vers) fruit. Slagroom kloppen en mengen met de quark, naar smaak suiker toevoegen; vervolgens eerst een laag fruit in een kommetje of glas doen, daarna een laag roomquark en bovenop nog een portie fruit. Hoe kouder het dessert is, hoe beter het smaakt! Bon appétit!

At least a real 'delight', but not really 'light', as there's whipped cream under the white cheese. Easy to prepare and deliciously creamy as few desserts are: a red-fruit-trifle, but without the cookies in it. You can make a trifle in many different ways, but for this variant I used only white (low-fat) cheese, whipped cream, sugar and red fruit. My mix of currants, blackberries, raspberries, cherries and cranberries is frozen, but you can replace them by any other (fresh) fruit of course. Whip the cream and mix with the white cheese, add some sugar; then put a first layer of fruit in a bowl or glass, thereupon you add a layer of cream-cheese and afterwards a portion of fruit again. The colder this dessert is, the better it will taste! Bon appétit!

Un vrai délice pour le moins, mais pas vraiment 'light', puisqu'il y a de la crème chantilly dans le fromage blanc. Facile à faire et délicieusement crémeux comme peu d'autres desserts: un trifle-aux-fruits-rouges, mais sans les petit gâteaux. On peut préparer un trifle de multiples façons, mais pour cette variante j'ai utilisé seulement du fromage blanc (maigre), de la chantilly, du sucre et des fruits rouges. Mon mélange de baies rouges, de mûres, de framboises, de cérises et du cassis vient du congélateur, mais on peut les remplacer par n'importe quels autres fruits (frais) bien sûr. Préparer la chantilly, mélanger avec le fromage blanc, y rajouter du sucre; ensuite mettre d'abord une couche de fruits dans un petit bol ou verre, puis une couche de fromage et finalement encore une portion de fruits. Plus ce dessert est froid, plus le goût va être bon! Bon appétit!

Brown or white?

Zal ik deze stoel - we hebben er 2 van - donkerbruin laten of toch maar wit schilderen? Eigenlijk staat donkerbruin ook niet slecht in onze kleine keuken naast alle zink, maar later, als de keuken helemaal verbouwd zal zijn, wordt de basis helemaal helder en wit. Misschien is het dan wel mooi om toch ook wat contrast te hebben en de stoelen dus te laten zoals ze zijn. Wordt vervolgd. Gisteren ook nog 2 oude witte kommen met een mooie reliëf-rand gekocht in de kringloop: een aanvulling op mijn verzameling (Boch-)porselein.

Shall I keep the darkbrown colour of this chair - we have 2 of them - or paint them white? In fact that brown isn't that bad in combination with the zinc in our little kitchen, but later on, if the whole kitchen will be rebuilt, the basis will be all bright and white. Maybe it will be nice then to have some contrast and to leave the chairs as they are. Will be continued. Yesterday I bought in our thriftshop also 2 old white bowls with a beautiful brim in relief: a completion of my (Boch-) china-collection.

Est-ce que je vais garder cette chaise - nous en avons 2 comme ça - comme elle est: brun foncé ou est-ce que je vais la peindre en blanc? En fait, ce brun n'est pas laid du tout à côté de tout le zinc dans notre petite cuisine, mais plus tard, quand notre cuisine va être reconstruite, la base sera toute entièrement claire et blanche. Peut-être ce sera bien alors d'avoir un peu de contrast et de laisser les chaises comme elles sont. Affaire à suivre. Hier j'ai encore acheté 2 vieux récipients blancs avec un joli bord en reliëf dans la brocante: un complément de ma collection de vaisselle (Boch).

Handmade lace

De stad Brugge - ook het 'Venetië van het Noorden' genoemd - staat bekend om haar kantwinkels waar al dan niet handgeklost kantwerk wordt verkocht. Maar veel van die artikelen zijn evenwel 'made in China' (waarschuwing voor de toeristen!) en echt antiek handgemaakt kant is erg duur. Dit elegante mandje kwam ik vandaag tegen in de kringloopwinkel en er hangt een labeltje aan met de vermelding: 'Pure linen lace handmade in Belgium'. Ik weet nog niet waar ik het voor ga gebruiken, maar dat is vaak zo met spulletjes die ik aanschaf en die zich hier opstapelen... met name de knutselmaterialen, linten en bandjes.

Bruges - a town near the seaside in Belgium and also called the 'Northern Venice' - is known because of its many shops where you can buy lace, handmade or not. Most of those products however are 'made in China' (warning for the tourists!) and real antique handmade lace is quite expensive. I found this elegant basket in our thriftshop today and there's a little label on it saying: 'Pure linen lace handmade in Belgium'. I don't know yet what I'll do with it, but that's very often the case with stuff I buy and which accumulates here... especially hobby-materials and ribbons.

La Ville de Bruges - aussi appelée 'la Venise du Nord' - est connue pour ses nombreuses boutiques où on vend de la dentelle, faite de façon artisanale ou non. La plupart des articles est pourtant 'made in China' (avertissement pour les touristes!) et la vraie dentelle antique est bien chère. J'ai trouvé cet élégant petit panier aujourd'hui dans notre brocante et il porte une étiquette disant: 'Pure linen lace handmade in Belgium'. Je ne sais pas encore ce que je vais en faire, mais c'est souvent le cas avec les babioles que j'achète et qui s'accumulent ici... surtout le matériel de bricolage, des bandelettes et des rubans.
